What Are the Benefits of Using Trussed Rafters?

“Why use trussed rafters?” is a question we’re asked on a regular basis.

That’s why we thought we’d tackle this subject as one of our very first blog posts. But before we start, let’s make it clear exactly what we mean by trussed rafters.

Using the words of The Trussed Rafter Association:

“Trussed rafters are individually designed components made from kiln-dried, strength-graded timber joined together with steel nailplates. They provide a structural framework to support the roof fabric, ceilings and /or floors… [they] can be used on a wide range of building types including timber frame, masonry and steel…Although most commonly used for domestic housing they are increasingly chosen for commercial and industrial buildings such as offices, shops, hotels and leisure centres”.

So as you can see, trussed rafters are relied upon heavily by architects and builders in both the domestic and the commercial sectors.

What is the difference between trussed and traditional rafters?

The essential differences between the two are how and where they are constructed.

Traditional rafters are sloped framing members that run from the apex of the roof to the outside walls. They are put in place one-by-one, on site by a joiner. Trussed rafters on the other hand, are pre-fabricated, engineered triangles that are delivered ready to slot into place on site.

If you’re sitting on the fence about whether or not trussed timbers are the right solution for a project you’re working on, let us share why we think they are so worthy of your attention:

1. They’re extremely versatile. A solution that is suited to a whole range of different roof structures and styles of building, trussed rafters are tried and tested and have stood the test of time. A structural framework that is developing as raw materials and technology develop, you know that if you work with the right supplier, a trussed rafter solution will be state-of-the-art and speedy, yet still steeped in tradition. This way of working lends itself to every project from the simplest to the most innovative.

2. They’re economical. Using up to 40% less timber than traditional roof structures, the price tag associated with this solution comes as a surprise to many.

3. They’re pre-fabricated, which means you can organise delivery for when you’re ready, reducing the need for onsite storage space. What’s more, with a faster fitting time that requires less skill, you can work in the knowledge that the risk of costly delays is significantly reduced.

4. They’re energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Unlike metal or concrete, trussed rafters are energy efficient and environmentally friendly. This renewable, low-tech and energy efficient solution means that even the eco-friendliest client will be delighted with your choice.
