Ochil’s SpaceStud delivers award-winning construction for Commonwealth Games Athletes’ Village

The Athletes' Village for Scotland’s 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow consisted of 700 new homes built to exemplary design standards. On completion of the Games, Legacy Plans included bringing these properties to market in a mix of social housing for rent and private homes for sale.

CCG were responsible for building 237 houses in the Village, achieving this within a remarkably short build period of 15 months. This development set and achieved specific design objectives, including a 60% carbon reduction on 2007 levels, and complied with 2013 building regulations – an industry first. Using CCG Off-Site Manufacturing, a typical terrace of 8 townhouses was erected in just 10 days.

Ochil Timber supplied their innovative SpaceStud and SpaceJoist engineered timber system to CCG, providing offsite construction for 208 terraces, 24 flats and 5 houses. This included design and manufacture of SpaceJoist cassette floors.

This was the first occasion in which SpaceStud had been specified for a housing contract of this scale and Ochil MD Andrew McAree comments:
