Ochil Timber delivers the natural choice at Invergowrie Primary School
Ochil Timber’s SpaceStud system was specified by Perth & Kinross Council (PKC) for their new Primary School at Invergowrie, awarding Ochil their first complete school supply and erect contract. Manufactured entirely in home grown timber, with larch cladding and hemp insulation, Ochil’s SpaceStud provided a cost effective and natural solution.
Lightweight construction was chosen for its recyclability and embodied energy and says PKC’s project architect Sarah Webb, “SpaceStud offered an efficient way to do that.” Budget was important and savings were made by avoiding using wet trades wherever possible, which Sarah confirms, ”delivered a very efficient, clean, natural build.”
Ochil incorporated hemp into their manufacture of the wall studs which provided strong, efficient, walls, meeting the 0.15u value specified. The site provided a generous footprint for a single storey primary school with an elevated hall and dining hall, which allowed maximum light into the heart of the building. A green roof was incorporated and the building was clad in untreated Scottish larch and breathable render.
Main contractors on the project were Morrison Construction, who had planned to use a standard timber kit but opted for SpaceStud as it was lighter, used less timber, and the wider panels minimised cold bridging. Morrison’s Project Manager, Barry Dick, comments “SpaceStud provided lightweight construction and met all specifications on energy performance. Ochil were excellent, well managed and well organised, and we saved several days on our build programme.”
